Neuropsychomotor functions assessment battery

Prof. Laurence Vaivre-Douret

Information

There are many performance measures for motor skills, but few tools rely on a developmental approach. Based on pioneering work in the field of French neurology, the battery to assesss neuro-psychomotor functions (NP-MOT) provides a neuro-functional developmental approach to evaluation. The NP-MOT battery is a standardized evaluation of neuro-psychomotor functions, exploring from the age of 4 with identical subtests whatever the age, taking qualitative and quantitative components of the gesture into account and with calibrations (means and standard deviations, Z-scores and standardized scores): muscle tone, global locomotion, laterality, praxis, digital and tactile gnosis, oculo-manual dexterity, integration of bodily spatial orientation, rhythm and auditory attention (selective and sustained).

The battery is standardized and validated on a large population, enabling investigations at all ages, while maturation norms saturate before 10 years of age. It enables deficits to be distinguished from delays from 4 years of age compared to a normal process of cerebral maturation, and it allows discreet minor cerebral disorders to be detected, which are often not captured by a global evaluation of performances.

The NP-MOT battery thus contributes to providing important semiological and diagnosticpathological and physiological viewpoint, enabling a more efficient aetiological approach and a more precise therapeutic orientation. The NP-MOT battery is the reference assessment tool in many countries and it has been recommended in France by the French health authorities (Haute Autorité de la Santé – HAS) in the program dedicated to the autism spectrum disorders and the assessment of neuro-developmental disorders.
